Toronto, Canada / Madrid, Spain – CURA announced at the Spain-Canada Business Summit in Toronto that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ACCIONA, the global sustainable-infrastructure leader generating more than $20B in 2024 sales. CURA is pioneering energy-efficient electrochemical cement production that cuts CO2 emissions by up to 85%.

Under this collaboration, cement produced using CURA’s process will be validated for deployment in one of ACCIONA’s flagship projects. The partnership will focus on rigorously assessing both the performance and the emissions profile of CURA’s low‑carbon cement, marking a critical step toward large‑scale adoption in the construction sector.

Cement is an essential building material and the ‘glue’ that holds concrete together; however, traditional cement manufacturing accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions. The team at CURA recognizes the role that cement manufacturing plays in climate change and is dedicated to working with cement manufacturers to build technology that can reduce their emissions while still producing industry-standard products, like Ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

This partnership will enable ACCIONA to provide its clients, in the more than 40 countries where it operates, with solutions to reduce embodied carbon in new infrastructure.

“The collaboration with ACCIONA marks an important step in CURA’s path from laboratory innovation to field-tested performance,” said Erin Bobicki, CEO of CURA. “ACCIONA’s global leadership in sustainable infrastructure development makes them an ideal partner to help validate cement made with CURA’s technology and demonstrate how we can reduce the carbon required to produce the foundations of our built environment.”

In the first phase of the agreement, CURA will supply low-carbon cement produced by its technology for ACCIONA to conduct key performance testing and life cycle assessment. Successful outcomes of this initial phase will result in both parties exploring opportunities for pilot-scale deployment in one of ACCIONA’s flagship sustainability projects.

“At ACCIONA, innovation and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do,” said Jose Vera-Agullo, Executive Technical Leader at ACCIONA. “We are constantly evaluating emerging technologies that can accelerate the decarbonization of infrastructure. Testing CURA’s technology aligns perfectly with our mission to reduce Scope 3 emissions and to transform how we build for a more sustainable world.”

ACCIONA’s leadership in sustainable construction is demonstrated by their commitment to support CURA’s product validation. Through this collaboration, the two companies are accelerating the decarbonization  of the world’s most essential building material.

ACCIONA took part on December 3 in the “Innovative Solutions Showcase” session of the Spain–Canada Business Summit, organized by ICEX in Toronto—an event designed to promote new collaboration opportunities between Spain and Canada in the fields of innovation, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure.

Representing ACCIONA, Anton Ricafort, Director of Innovation and Technology for the North America Infrastructure business, presented the company’s vision for digital transformation and the latest initiatives developed together with the I’MNOVATION ecosystem. During his presentation, Anton highlighted success stories in the use of AI for preconstruction teams and computer vision technologies applied to operations and maintenance, as reflected in the event’s official documentation.

The session brought together corporations, specialized investment funds (CVCs and VCs), and key players from the Canadian innovation ecosystem, fostering a space for technological exchange and the search for new local partners.

Participation of startups collaborating with ACCIONA

The event also featured the participation of two startups from the I’MNOVATION ecosystem:

  • CureClimate, a startup we are currently working with, focuses on innovation in sustainable materials—especially low-emissions cement and lime—driving electrochemical decarbonization processes that can transform the construction value chain.
  • Multiverse Computing, an I’MNOVATION program alumnus, specializes in AI model compression and quantum simulation for industrial environments. Its technology enables the deployment of advanced models while optimizing computational, energy, and connectivity resources, with direct applications in infrastructure and complex operations.
Both companies participated in the Showcase as representatives of the new generation of climate and industrial solutions redefining the future of construction.

Driving new partnerships in North America

Through this participation, ACCIONA reinforces its commitment to open innovation and its interest in identifying technological partners—startups, universities, and research centers—that help accelerate the integration of advanced solutions into the company’s infrastructure projects in the region.

From I’MNOVATION, we continue to strengthen our international presence and explore new collaboration opportunities to bring high-impact innovation to ACCIONA projects worldwide.

ACCIONA has received support from the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) to drive the development of two proprietary innovations from its Water business, with applications in water treatment at an international level.
This initiative is part of the OEPM’s “Program to promote Spanish patent and utility model applications domestically and abroad for 2024,” whose main objective is to stimulate the use of industrial property by Spanish companies and facilitate their access to international markets.

DIFFUSAIR®: microbubbles without mechanical equipment

DIFFUSAIR® is an exclusive device designed to generate microbubbles at low pressure, without the need for additional equipment such as blowers or compressors.
This technology reduces costs associated with mechanical aeration equipment, decreases energy consumption, and improves the robustness and adaptability of water treatment systems.
Broad-spectrum molecular spectroscopy equipment
In collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, ACCIONA has developed proprietary equipment for continuous characterization of pollutant loads in wastewater.
This technology facilitates automatic sampling and characterization at the time of collection. Additionally, it allows water analysis over time, expanding the number and type of parameters that can be determined.
The two ACCIONA innovations selected by the OEPM to be part of this program reinforce the company’s commitment to developing proprietary technology in the water sector.Reintentar

ACCIONA has participated in the first hackathon held at the ALBA Synchrotron, a unique scientific infrastructure in Europe located in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona). The ALBA Synchrotron accelerates electrons to reach high energy levels and emit synchrotron light, which enables scientists to visualize the atomic and molecular structure of matter and study its properties.

During the first ALBA Hackathon — organized by the Cerdanyola del Vallès City Council, the Research Park of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (PRUAB), and the ALBA Synchrotron, with support from the Barcelona Provincial Council — innovation was promoted in strategic sectors such as water, waste, and energy. The intensive event brought together nearly a hundred students from various Spanish universities and technology centers, who formed multidisciplinary teams to tackle real-world challenges proposed by companies such as ACCIONA. The proposed solutions, in addition to using synchrotron light, were required to include an implementation plan for real business environments.

Challenge Proposed by ACCIONA

ACCIONA’s challenge focused on finding innovative solutions for the regeneration of adsorbents saturated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water treatment plants. The goal was to overcome current limitations, which include high regeneration costs, significant energy consumption, and a large carbon footprint in existing commercial alternatives—making them environmentally unsustainable.

The winning team for this challenge was “Critical Carbon,” which proposed an in-situ regeneration of granular activated carbon saturated with PFAS in a closed-loop system using supercritical CO₂.
In addition to receiving a cash prize, the winning team will have the opportunity to further develop their solution in collaboration with the ALBA Synchrotron and ACCIONA’s Innovation Department.
